Editorial: In the wake of the new H-1B law, we should all have an idea of how much a President's stand on immigration can impact this nation's approach to immigration.

Both Gore and Bush seem to have a fairly positive view on legal immigration, and only a miracle from the heavens could get another candidate into office, so immigrants and those concerned with their plight are probably feeling pretty secure right now, while anti-immigration folks are likely gritting their teeth.

But complacency can be your enemy. If you care about immigration issues, and you are a U.S. citizen, registered to vote who hasn't taken the time to review all the details on each candidate's immigration platform, as well as their track record on these issues, you might be voting for the wrong person.

Did you know for example, that one of Bush's major agenda's is to reduce all immigration processing times to 6 months? Or that Gore's key goal is to focus on keeping families together? Depending on which type of application you have, one of these noble goals may mean a great deal more to you than the other.

And then there is history. Don't forget that Gore is part of an administration that signed in the 96 law, or that Bush governs a state which has been unable to handle its own illegal immigration problems.

Finally, we should all consider character. And that's something very personal, based on each of our own code of ethics. Some immigrants find it terribly offensive that immigrants can be deported for a DWI, retroactively no less, while Americans are going out to vote for a man who has been charged with driving under the influence. Others, all over the world, associate Gore with Bill Clinton, who remained in office despite lying under oath, while immigrants can be jailed for a single instance of lying on an immigration application.

Those who are anti-immigration will probably want to vote for Buchanan, whose theme is "Putting Americans First," and who has made no effort to conceal his very strong desire to curb legal immigration.

Sometimes the choices seem both difficult and grim, but your vote does count, and you should not let it go to waste. Think about your choices and make the one that's right for you.

Please return on November 3rd for a last minute Election special on immigration issues in the election.
